The Junction has quickly emerged as one of Toronto's fastest-growing neighbourhoods. Its name comes from its landscape, originally once the heart of the Canadian Pacific Railway as it was the area where four railway lines met. Now, its geography is booming boast tree-lined streets and century brick homes. It's become a trendy place to live due to the various amenities it has to offer. There is no shortage of arts and culture, great places to eat, and unique places to shops. Another characteristic that makes this West Side neighbourhood a great choice is to live in the park’s spaces. There is so much to explore in the area, including the largest park in the city. Here is a list of the most popular green spaces surrounding the Junction.
HUMBER MARSHES
The Humber Marshes is truly one of the hidden gems of the city. There are not many spots where you can bird-watch or choose to go fishing. The Humber Marshes is indeed rare, as it is one of the only remaining river mouth marshes in the city. The Humber River has long been an integral part of Toronto's history. In fact, the Humber River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1999.
The Humber Marshes was once an area for trading. In 1749 there was a French trading fort in the area. Besides the historical significance of the Humber Marshes, there are quite a few sights to set your eyes on. As part of the largest watersheds in the city, it is a great place to see migratory songbirds and monarch butterflies. If you visit during the right time of the year, you will see the sky filled with those beautiful oranges and black butterflies. Once you're done looking at the sky, move your attention towards the water. If you like salmon, pike trout, then the Humber Marshes is the place to be. More the 60 species of fish live in the river, making it an excellent place for sport fishing.
HIGH PARK
If you didn't already know, High Park is the largest park in Toronto. The park definitely makes the most of the space. It is recognized as a significant green space in Toronto. In fact, some call it "the jewel" of the city's park systems. The nickname is well-earned. You can spend the entire day at High Park and still not be able to experience all that the park has to offer. Another highlight of the park is there is plenty to see all year round.
There are plenty of natural trails which take visitors through the forest to see wildlife and native trees. The trails can also be accessed in the winter for some cross-country skiing. There is also Grenadier Pond which makes for an excellent spot for fishing. Just like the forest, the pond can be used in the winter too. Many residents enjoy skating on the pond in the winter.
Finally, who needs the Toronto Zoo when you have a zoo in your own backyard? High Park Zoo includes native and exotic animals, including peacocks, bison and llamas.
Other park attractions include the plethora of sports facilities that can be rented, Colborne Lodge historic site, a dog park, swimming pools, fitness equipment and playgrounds for children.
